FairIsle Workshop

A new class in April. This class is now sold out.

12 noon - 4:30pm with half hour break

For knitters who can already knit and follow a basic knitting pattern.
Participants will learn how to knit in the round, working several colours simultaneously by stranding the yarn behind the right-side of the work.

To summarise the techniques you will learn are:

  • Continental or German method of knitting (tensioning the yarn in left-hand)

  • Circular knitting on circular needles, double pointed needles and the 'magic loop'

  • Fair Isle: working with two colours simultaneously

  • Stranding and weaving of yarn floats

  • Reading Fair Isle graphs

  • Swiss darning: how to add further colours or correct mistakes

  • Adapting patterns to circular knitting

  • There will also be an explanation of steeking (cutting and sewing of the armholes and necklines), along with samples.

Materials: For this class, several balls of Shetland wool are included.

  • Please bring 100 cm length circular needles in a size that you think will give you a good tension with a 4 ply yarn, you may wish to bring a selection (2.75 - 3.25mm is typical).

Taught by Juju Vail.

Juju studied fashion design in Canada and ran a knitwear business that sold hand knits across North America. An MA in textile design brought her to London over twenty years ago. She is a busy designer with her finger in lots of pies, (yum, pie!); writing craft books on many subjects. She loves to research and explore new techniques, and make swatches. Juju and Susan Cropper (owner of Loop) collaborated on the pattern book, Juju’s Loops reflecting the Loop knitted style. Juju has also written other popular Loop patterns such as the Pop Spots and Charm shawls. Juju hosts the Thursday knit nights at Loop, writes knitting patterns, blogs, teaches, photographs, paints and draws. Juju is a Continental-knitting picker and believes herself to be the world’s fastest knitter but hasn’t proved it... yet.

*Yarn is included; please bring your own needles (see above). Classes are held in the shop. Maximum of 7 students per class.
100% deposit is required at registration.
