This blend of qiviut, merino wool and silk still maintains much of the amazing properties of 100% qiviut. Qiviuk is the muskox’s downy undercoat. The down fiber is harvested by hand once a year in the spring. Since an adult muskox only sheds between four to six pounds of fiber per year, qiviut is quite rare. The yarn is incredibly soft and lightweight. As fine if not finer than cashmere, qiviut is eight times warmer than wool. But the fiber is also very durable. The addition of the silk adds sheen to the dyed colors. Given its rarity, softness and warmth, qiviut is mostly used to knit accessories such as hats, scarves, mittens and gloves. It's also incredibly beautiful for shawls and wraps. It's like knitting with clouds! |
